ARTS! By the People "Our goal is to empower individuals in our community through collaborative acts of self expression. We believe that self awareness and communication come forth in shared creative acts, and that the arts offer universal benefits for people of all ages and backgrounds". ABOUT THE ARTIST Sarah Valeri grew up engaging in the arts. At times her work has been strictly personal, yet, over the past few years she has been exhibiting throughout the New York area and Barcelona, Spain. Sarah also collaborates with her band, KMBS, creating art pieces that develop during their live musical performances. Inspired by her encounters with her students, these subjects usually found their way into her artwork. Later feeling the need to address educational laws, she decided to further her education and research more progressive methods of education. After having been accepted to Harvard to study Human Development and NYU to study art therapy, art therapy won. The decision was based on her educational philosophy that working “eye to eye” would be the best way to learn from and support others. Since then Sarah has facilitated art groups for therapeutic purposes as well as organizing open studio and community art projects in her neighborhood and shelters. She has also worked with children in special needs programs, as well as a teaching artist in the public schools. Currently Sarah is working as an art therapist with visually impaired and multiply handicapped children at the Jewish Guild for the Blind in Manhattan. “My interest lies in facilitating creative, interactive art experiences so others can find their own voice in the arts. I believe that art has been building empathy and connection in communities and good health for humans for as long as we can remember." SV You can contact Sarah directly at 646.284.0029
